One of the most pleasant places to stay in the area is l'Ile-Rousse, with its wonderful white sand beach and its red porphyry islets which give the Riviera style resort its name. The old town, developed in the eighteenth century by Pascal Paoli,"the Father of the Corsican Nation" features paved streets, somptuous residences of the past and a historical market. A bridge connects the commercial port to the mainland. The new town spreads out beyond the wonderful Square Pascal Paoli, shaded by old plane trees. For a detailed visit of l'Ile-Rousse, arrange a guided tour or an audiovisual guide at the Tourist Office. An entertaining tour can as well be done with the Little Tourist Train which shuttles up and down the town and the Ile de la Pietra with its lighthouse at the far end.
